FAQS

WHAT ARE TIMBER BATTENS?

Timber batten cladding is a versatile design feature in which beams of timber are installed in a linear fashion with a small gap between each beam. Battens are commonly used on interior and exterior walls, ceiling and as stand alone privacy screens.

WHAT WOOD IS USED FOR TIMBER BATTENS?

We offer our batten systems with a wide range of sustainable wood species including jarrah, spotted gum, blackbutt, ironbark, Vic ash, American ash and more. Thermally modified Nordic pine is used for our Vacoa cladding.

If you have a project with specific needs, we may be able to offer additional species on request. Please get in touch to discuss your needs and the suitability of different wood species for your project.

DOES MORTLOCK OFFER INSTALLATION SERVICES?

Mortlock Timber does not offer installation services. Our timber batten products can be installed by a qualified carpenter or joiner.

We work closely with builders, architects and installers to ensure a successful project. That may include things like providing installation information, maintenance recommendations and project-specific advice.

WHAT IS THE LEAD TIME FROM ORDER TO DELIVERY?

Lead times can vary, depending on the options you choose. Typically we will take 6-8 weeks between order and delivery, although this may be shorter or longer depending on the specifics of your order.

The best way to get accurate lead times is to contact us directly with your project requirements.

How can I customise the appearance of timber battens?

Timber battens offer a high degree of customisation to suit various architectural styles and preferences. At Mortlock Timber, we provide a range of timber species, such as American Oak, Blackbutt, and Jarrah, each with its unique grain pattern and color palette. You can choose from various profiles, dimensions, and spacing configurations to achieve your desired look. Finishes can be tailored as well, from natural oils that bring out the timber’s natural beauty to more protective coatings like WOCA Wood Oil or Enviro Clear, providing a perfect match for your project’s visual and functional requirements.

Are timber battens suitable for use in high-moisture environments?

Yes, timber battens can be used in high-moisture environments, provided the right timber species and finishes are selected. Species such as Jarrah, Ironbark, and Blackbutt are naturally resistant to moisture and decay, making them ideal for humid or wet areas. Applying a high-quality finish, like a water-repellent treatment, further protects the timber from moisture absorption and prolongs its lifespan. At Mortlock we offer several protective finishes designed to increase the ability to last and resilience of our timber battens in wet and wild environments.

Can timber battens be used with other materials in a mixed-material facade?

Absolutely! Timber battens are highly versatile and can be seamlessly integrated with other materials, such as metal, glass, or stone, to create striking mixed-material facades. This combination can add depth, texture, and contrast to a building’s exterior, adding to its architectural appeal. Timber’s natural warmth and texture provide a beautiful counterpoint to the sleekness of metal or the solidity of stone, offering endless design possibilities. Our Proplank range is particularly suitable for mixed-material applications, thanks to its precise manufacturing and customisable options

How often do timber battens need to be maintained?

The maintenance frequency for timber battens depends on the chosen timber species, finish, and exposure to environmental elements. Generally, timber battens need periodic cleaning and reapplication of their protective finishes to preserve their appearance and longevity. For outdoor applications exposed to sun, rain, or salt air, we recommend a maintenance schedule of every 1-2 years. Indoor applications may need less frequent maintenance, depending on the environment. we’ll provide you with guidance and product options to keep your timber battens beautiful and imperishable with minimal upkeep.

Can timber battens be used for both interior and exterior applications?

Yes, timber battens are suitable for both interior and exterior applications, offering flexibility for a cohesive design throughout a project. For interior use, timber battens add warmth and texture to walls, ceilings, and partitions, creating visually dynamic and acoustically comfortable spaces. Exterior applications benefit from timber’s natural beauty and ability to last, giving you shade, privacy, or decorative features. Here at Mortlock Timber, our Proplank and Trendplank systems are designed to excel in both environments, with customisable profiles and finishes to meet specific project requirements.
