Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse

Naturaliste, WA

about the project

A standout feature of the design is the use of Jarrah timber, a material renowned for its strength, durability, and deep, rich hues. The Marineplank 130×30 and 130×20 Jarrah, pre-oiled to protect and highlight the timber’s natural grain, is used throughout the structure, providing an elegant and functional solution for the lighthouse’s exterior and decking areas. This sustainable material, known for its resilience in harsh coastal conditions, ensures the lighthouse remains a lasting symbol of architectural and historical heritage.

The inclusion of green sawn Jarrah subframe material further enhances the project’s commitment to using local, sustainable resources, reinforcing the lighthouse’s connection to its environment. The natural variations in the grain and tone of the Jarrah timber add warmth and character to the space, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors while complementing the rugged beauty of the coastline.

Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse is not only a working lighthouse but also a popular tourist destination. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the region’s maritime history and the lighthouse’s important role in guiding ships along the treacherous coastline. Visitors can take in panoramic coastal views from the tower’s balcony after a brief climb of just 59 steps, making the experience both accessible and rewarding.
