specie overview

IRONGUM TIMBER

Often dominating plateaus, tablelands and slopes in open forests and woodlands, irongum is native to eastern Australia. Irongum is distinguished by its smooth-barked upper branches and discolorous leaves.

This timber is extremely durable, with heartwood ranging in color from light to dark red. Once applied with a Shou Sugi Ban technique, irongum’s interlocked grain emerges through the char layer. Irongum is perfect for our charring process as we are able to achieve a thick char layer with a crackled surface (reminiscent of a crocodile), while still highlighting the natural features of the native hardwood.

BENEFITS OF USING IRONGUM TIMBER

Irongum timber is often used for exterior applications because of the durability and workability of the timber. Paired with penetrating coatings, this durability is strengthened and bolstered for the Australian climate.

For a native and dense hardwood, irongum chars extremely well and embodies a crackled, sharp and robust charcoal surface.

Applications

Because of its durability and resistance to the elements, irongum is commonly used for exterior applications. But the timber is not limited to exteriors. Irongum in our Trendplank profile, finished with our Shou Sugi Ban has produced amazing results. It is often a more durable and affordable alternative to charred jarrah.

IRONGUM PRODUCTS

At Mortlock Timber, we supply a variety of irongum timber products for both interior and exterior uses. Our Trendplank range of concealed fixed timber cladding can be employed for wall battens, ceiling battens, timber screening, and interior/exterior timber cladding. All of these are available in a selection of different finishes to fit both traditional and modern architecture.

This includes our Shou Sugi Ban finishing technique of charring the timber with fire.

IRONGUM FINISHES

The two oil options we use at Mortlock Timber are Cutek Clear Oil and WOCA Exterior Oil. Both come in a range of stained colours to fit any look. For external applications, we commonly apply Cutek Clear CD50, which penetrates deeply into the timber for maximum durability. WOCA Wood Oil, on the other hand, is used to enhance the timber’s natural colour. The result is a diverse range of finishes that goes from dark to light colours.

FAQS

WHAT IS IRONGUM TIMBER?

Irongum is a native Australian hardwood, sourced from the east coast of Australia. This is a high-density species that displays a reliable, interlocked grain.

WHAT IS IRONGUM TIMBER USED FOR?

Irongum is effectively used for exterior cladding in our Trendplank profile. It is a Shou Sugi Ban alternative to using jarrah and spotted gum, but only if BAl 29 does not need to be achieved.

Popular applications can include wall and ceiling cladding, with or without a Shou Sugi Ban finish.

HOW MUCH DOES IRONGUM COST?

Our irongum timber cladding ranges from $200 p/m2 to $240 p/m2 depending on the specifications. All prices exclude GST and delivery.

IS IRONGUM A SUSTAINABLE TIMBER?

Irongum does not fall under our PEFC Chain of Custody certification. However, upon request, we can source, machine and deliver to meet a specific project’s requirements.

WHAT IS THE DURABILITY OF IRONGUM TIMBER?

Irongum is a dense, durable timber. It has a natural resistance to decay and pests (including termites). While its density is advantageous, the hardness of the timber can be unfamiliar to those not used to installing it.
